Three different layers, three separate handovers
The Account Holder is a role inside the developer team. The Apple ID is the login and verification credential. The renewal card is the payment method charged when the membership auto-renews. When a seller says you get the whole account, they have often handed over only one or two of these. Ask for each layer separately, including who keeps any control after delivery. If any answer is vague, hold off on payment.
Account Holder: check the account type before the transfer method
On an organization account, the Account Holder is the top-level role, and the membership area generally offers a way to transfer it. The exact entry point and conditions depend on Apple's pages at the time. An individual account works differently: membership is tied to the person who enrolled, and that person is the Account Holder. There is no equivalent of handing the role to someone else. So confirm whether you are getting an individual or organization account, which legal entity the membership page shows, and whether that entity matches who you need to publish and get paid as. A mismatch affects app naming, privacy disclosures and agreement signing later.
Apple ID: the email, trusted phone and recovery path must move together
Being able to log in does not mean you control the account. Check four things: whether control of the Apple ID email is included; whether the trusted phone number for two-factor authentication is now one you hold; whether recovery contacts or devices still point to the previous owner; and whether this Apple ID also serves as the seller's personal iCloud or purchase identity. The test is simple. After handover, you should be able to complete a full sign-in and verification with only your own email, phone and device, and the previous holder should have no recovery route left. If you cannot get there, the account is only temporarily yours.
Renewal card: expiry date and payer matter more than price
Developer membership is annual, and letting it lapse affects the visibility and updating of published apps; exact consequences follow Apple's rules at the time. Before handover, note the membership expiry date, check whether auto-renew is on, and find out whose payment method is charged. If the seller's card remains attached, renewal notices, refunds and unexpected charges still go to them. The safe approach is to replace it with your own payment method right after delivery and confirm the old card is removed. If expiry is only days after handover, settle who renews and how the cost is split before you commit.
Accounts with existing apps add Team ID, certificates and user roles
For an aged account with apps already published, review the Users and Access settings in App Store Connect for other members and API keys. Also confirm who holds the Bundle ID, distribution certificates and push keys, and whether the existing developer name fits how you plan to use the account. Leftover outside members and keys mean you cannot independently decide who has access. If cleanup is needed, write down who does it and by when in the handover checklist.
Conditions under which to stop
Pause rather than negotiate price if any of these appear: the seller cannot explain how the Account Holder changes or which legal entity owns the membership; the Apple ID email or trusted phone cannot be handed over; you cannot replace the renewal card; the account contains unfamiliar members or keys that will not be removed; or the membership status differs from what was described. These are hard to fix after delivery, because the verification and recovery controls are not in your hands.
FAQ
Should the Apple ID email be changed to my own after delivery?
What matters is control, not the format. If the original email is still held by the seller, they keep a password-reset route. You should hold the email, phone and verification devices, whether by changing the email or adding an admin, as far as Apple allows at the time.
What happens if renewal fails?
A lapsed membership affects app availability and your ability to update, with exact behavior and any grace period depending on Apple's pages at the time. Confirm the payment method is valid before the expiry date and keep a reminder.
